Minamisanriku fossil excavation event to be held in Tokyo
The Minamisanriku Town Tourism Association will host a special three-day excavation experience at the IMAGINUS science experience facility in Koenji, Tokyo, from September 21 to September 23, 2026.
Participants can spend approximately 20 minutes carving through rock blocks to discover hidden fossils and minerals. All discovered items, including “secret” specimens, can be taken home by the participants. The event is designed to showcase the paleontological appeal of Minamisanriku, a region in northeastern Miyagi Prefecture known for its abundant fossils, including the Utatsaurus, a primitive ichthyosaur from 250 to 160 million years ago.
The event requires no prior reservation and costs 1,200 yen per session.
