Minas Gerais authorities investigate hate speech and discrimination
Police and prosecutors in Minas Gerais, Brazil, are investigating multiple incidents of discriminatory content circulated on social media.
In Itambé do Mato Dentro, the Civil Police have opened an inquiry into a video containing discriminatory content targeting transgender individuals. Because the municipality lacks a dedicated station, the investigation is being led by the Santa Maria de Itabira unit to identify the authors and distributors of the material.
In Espinosa, a suspect was arrested in flagrante for allegedly spreading xenophobic content and inciting violence against people from Brazil's Northeast region. The investigation, conducted by the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) and the Civil Police, follows a video where the individual made threatening remarks regarding Northeasterners. Authorities are also examining digital evidence to determine if there was further incitement to violence or widespread support for the content.
