Minas Gerais coffee research highlights flowering management importance

The Sistema Faemg Senar has launched its first Coffee Crop Research in Varginha, Minas Gerais. This study provides consolidated projections on planted areas, productivity indices, and harvest estimates for Arabica coffee in the state. Unlike traditional indirect calculation methods, this research gathered direct data from approximately 7,000 coffee farmers in Minas Gerais, utilizing statistical treatment validated by the Center for Intelligence in Markets at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA).

Effective management of the flowering period is critical for determining the productivity of the upcoming harvest. Between September and November, major producing regions including Minas Gerais, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rondônia, and São Paulo enter the flowering stage. During this time, water availability, nutrition, and plant health are vital to ensure flower setting and fruit formation.

Environmental factors play a significant role, as water stress or nutritional deficiencies can lead to fruit abortion. While a moderate dry period can induce flowering, prolonged lack of water following the bloom increases the risk of losing young fruits. Proper irrigation and rainfall management are essential to prevent uneven flowering and ensure a stable harvest.
