Minas Gerais court orders state to provide costly pulmonary fibrosis treatment

The Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG) has ordered the State of Minas Gerais to provide free access to Nintedanib esylate for a patient suffering from progressive pulmonary fibrosis. The medication, which is essential to slow the disease, costs approximately R$ 237,000 per year.

The legal action was initiated in 2020 through the Legal Practice Center (NPJ) of Uniube. The court's decision establishes the state's responsibility for the treatment and sets the municipality of Uberaba as a subsidiary responsible party. This ruling provides legal security for the patient's continued care, as the annual cost of the medication is nearly nine times the patient's family income.
