Minas Gerais Court Payouts Exceed STF Salary Cap, One Employee Receives R$767k

In June 2026, at least 98 employees of the Tribunal de Justiça de Minas Gerais (TJMG) received net salaries above the ceiling set by the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The highest net payment recorded was R$767,736.82 to a judicial support officer whose base salary is R$25,600. Other large payments included two judicial officers who each received between R$531,000 and R$583,800.

The STF's new rules, effective since May, limit "penduricalhos" (extraordinary remuneration) to magistrates, prosecutors and public prosecutors, but do not apply to other court staff. TJMG says the excess amounts stem from indemnities, retroactive salaries and other legally provided benefits, and that it is complying with the STF directives. Because the public payroll data aggregates various allowances into single entries, it is not possible to verify how each individual payment aligns with the STF limits.

The court noted that 15 magistrates, one judge’s pensioner and the remaining 82 staff members were among those receiving amounts above the R$78,822.53 threshold, and that the payments were justified by constitutional vacation bonuses, indemnities, retroactive adjustments and similar benefits.
