Minas Gerais enacts new laws on drug seizure and public use
New legislation in Minas Gerais has introduced measures regarding drug control and public usage. Law 26.036, published in the state, authorizes the use of seized illicit drugs and explosive components for the training of K9 units. This material can be provided to the Civil Police, Penal Police, Military Police, and the Military Fire Department. Additionally, the law allows for the donation of human cadavers or amputated body segments for specialized canine training, subject to strict storage and control regulations.
In the capital city of Belo Horizonte, Law 12.102 has been promulgated, establishing a fine of R$ 1,500 for individuals caught possessing or consuming illicit drugs in public spaces. These spaces include streets, squares, sidewalks, and public buildings. The fine, which is subject to annual adjustment by the IPCA-E index, does not preclude potential criminal prosecution. The law also notes that undergoing treatment for chemical dependency may serve as a means to extinguish the fine.
