Minas Gerais establishes cybercrime unit and secures R$17 million restitution for municipalities
The Ministry of Public Prosecutor of Minas Gerais inaugurated new facilities for its Special Cybercrime Combat Group (Gaeciber) on 24 July 2024 in Belo Horizonte. Officials present included Prosecutor‑General Paulo de Tarso Morais Filho, Gaeciber coordinator André Salles Dias Pinto and representatives of state security agencies. Gaeciber will coordinate and advise prosecutorial bodies in the fight against cyber‑related offences.
On 29 July 2024, Caixa Econômica Federal signed an agreement with the Minas Gerais Municipal Association (AMM), the State Court of Accounts (TCE‑MG) and the Federal Regional Court of the 6th Region (TRF‑6) to return over R$17 million that was diverted from municipal accounts by cyber‑attacks. Eleven such agreements have been concluded, covering municipalities such as Carmópolis de Minas, Serro, Ribeirão Vermelho and others, with seven conciliation hearings scheduled for August. The restitution, including Selic‑rate correction, is expected to be completed by the end of the following month.
