Minas Gerais launches solid waste management project for 200 municipalities
The Government of Minas Gerais has launched the Urban Solid Waste Project, an initiative integrated into the sanitation program of the Rio Doce Reparation Agreement. The project aims to provide regionalized solutions for waste collection, treatment, and proper disposal across 200 municipalities within the basin.
The program is governed by the Minas Gerais Sanitation Steering Committee, with the State Secretariat of Planning and Management (Seplag-MG) serving as the Executive Secretariat. The initiative seeks to address critical challenges, including the existence of landfills, the need for improved waste treatment, and low rates of selective collection.
The committee includes participation from the State Secretariats of Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad-MG) and Infrastructure, Mobility, and Partnerships (Seinfra-MG), working in parity with the federal government through the Ministry of Cities and the Special Secretariat for the Investment Partnership Program (Seppi/Casa Civil).
