BR-251 highway collision kills seven after police chase
A high-speed chase and subsequent head-on collision on the BR-251 highway in Salinas, Minas Gerais, resulted in seven deaths. The incident began when the driver of a Fiat Cronos, Pedro Yan Linhares Gutierrez, 24, disobeyed a Federal Highway Police (PRF) order to stop at a routine checkpoint.
During a 10-kilometer pursuit, the driver performed dangerous maneuvers, including attempting to overtake four vehicles on a curve, which caused him to enter the oncoming lane. He collided head-on with a GM Astra. The four occupants of the Astra—Argemiro Machado da Silva, 79; Valmir Machado da Silva, 76; Alcides Silva Santos, 77; and Gilmar Bispo dos Santos, 46—died at the scene.
In the fleeing vehicle, three other people died: passenger Alana Alves da Silva, 28, and passenger Ramon Silverio Nogueira, 19, who later died in the hospital. The driver, Gutierrez, also died at the hospital. One 20-year-old woman survived the crash but remains in serious condition.
Authorities seized 168 blocks of marijuana, totaling 137 kilograms, from the vehicle. Investigations revealed that the driver did not possess a license and was wearing an electronic ankle monitor at the time of the incident.
