Minas Gerais interior cities gain political influence after 2026 elections

The 2026 elections in Minas Gerais have increased the political influence of interior cities, specifically Araguari and Divinópolis, within state and national decision-making spheres.

In Araguari, located in the Triângulo Mineiro region, three deputies linked to the municipality will hold mandates in the next legislature: Zé Vitor, re-elected as a federal deputy, and Raul Belém and Doorgal Andrada, elected as state deputies. Political maneuvering may lead one of these representatives to the presidency of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG).

Divinópolis, in the Centro-Oeste region, has expanded its representation through the election of Governor Cleitinho Azevedo and Senator Domingos Sávio, alongside other representatives with political ties to the city in the Chamber of Deputies and the State Assembly. These leadership concentrations are expected to enhance the ability of both cities to interact with the Minas Gerais state government and the National Congress.
