Minas Gerais mental health access faces significant gaps

Representatives from the Regional Council of Psychology of Minas Gerais (CRP-MG) have highlighted significant gaps in mental health access within the state. In Belo Horizonte, data indicates there are 493 psychologists in the public network serving a population of over 2.3 million, resulting in approximately one professional for every 4,696 residents.

Experts note that the number of registered professionals does not automatically guarantee service, as access depends on established local services, public policy, and stable employment to ensure continuity of care. Furthermore, only 274 of the 853 municipalities in Minas Gerais currently have a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS).

Discussions also addressed the mental health of rural workers in the region. Factors contributing to anxiety and depression in this sector include physical overload, economic pressure, financial unpredictability, exposure to weather conditions, isolation, and long working hours during planting and harvesting seasons.
