Minas Gerais municipalities to hold supplementary elections in December

The Regional Electoral Court of Minas Gerais (TRE-MG) has scheduled supplementary elections for December 6, 2026, in several municipalities: Santo Antônio do Rio Abaixo, Grupiara, Buritis, and Francisco Sá. These elections follow the annulment of mandates for winning mayoral and vice-mayoral candidates in the 2024 municipal contests.

In Santo Antônio do Rio Abaixo, Mayor Alexandre Rodrigues de Souza and Vice-Mayor Rilton Carlos de Alvarenga had their mandates revoked after the court recognized the abuse of political and economic power involving the distribution of construction materials. The city is currently under the interim leadership of Municipal Chamber President José Cláudio Ferreira da Silva.

In Grupiara, the mandates of Mayor Rogério Honorato Machado and his vice-mayor were annulled due to political power abuse by a predecessor. The court found that municipal administrative structures were used to favor a successor ticket through the creation of commissioned positions and temporary hires.

Political parties must hold conventions between October 27 and November 1, 2026, with candidate registration deadlines following on November 4. The newly elected officials will serve out the remainder of the current term ending December 31, 2028.
