Alexandre Kalil confirmed as PDT candidate for Minas Gerais governor
The Democratic Labour Party (PDT) formally nominated former Belo Horizonte mayor Alexandre Kalil as its candidate for the governorship of Minas Gerais during a convention on 26 July 2026 held in the Assembleia Legislativa de Minas Gerais (ALMG) in Belo Horizonte. Party president Carlos Lupi attended the event, which also approved the party’s legislative slates. The vice‑governor and Senate slots on Kalil’s ticket remain undecided.
Kalil, who previously ran for the governorship in 2022 and was cleared by a court after a conviction was overturned, said he will continue to contest the executive seat rather than shift to a Senate candidacy. In his convention speech he criticised incumbent governor Romeu Zema and current governor‑candidate Mateus Simões, accusing them of flawed fiscal policies.
Other parties in the Minas Gerais race are still finalising their positions. Senator Cleitinho Azevedo (Republicanos) has yet to announce whether he will run, while União Brasil is reportedly negotiating a possible substitution with former deputy Marcelo Aro should Cleitinho withdraw.
