Minas Gerais ranks second in Brazil for name changes via registry offices

Since the implementation of Federal Law No. 14.382/22 in July 2022, Minas Gerais has recorded 4,375 first-name changes directly through civil registry offices. This legislation removed the requirement for judicial intervention, allowing adults over 18 to request name changes without presenting a specific legal justification or proving social embarrassment.

Minas Gerais currently holds the second-highest number of name changes in Brazil, trailing only São Paulo, which has recorded 9,149 instances. Other states with significant numbers include Bahia, Paraná, and Pernambuco. Regionally, the Southeast accounts for the largest volume of name changes in the country, totaling 14,500 procedures.

In the city of Ituiutaba, twelve residents have utilized the new law to change their first names. Officials note that the simplified process strengthens citizenship by allowing individuals to align their legal identity with their social identity more easily.
