Minas Gerais Sets R$700,000 Cap on Publicly Funded Artist Fees

The Minas Gerais state legislature approved a bill that caps the fee paid to artists with state resources at R$700,000 per performance. For events financed by municipal budgets, the ceiling is R$500,000 and may not exceed 1% of the municipality’s net current revenue. The measure also limits spending on artists’ transport and accommodation to R$150,000 per show, requires contracts to be posted in advance on the Transparency Portal, and imposes sanctions on officials who breach the rules.

The bill, authored by deputies Antonio Carlos Arantes and Professor Cleiton, allows a discretionary increase of up to 10% for culturally significant events and a possible doubling of the limit during Carnival and New Year celebrations, provided additional conditions are met. After passing the second‑round vote in the Assembly, the proposal now awaits the signature of Governor Mateus Simões.
