Mindanao Railway Project seeks new international funding
The Mindanao Railway Project (MRP) is pursuing new financing options following the collapse of previous funding plans involving China. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has engaged in discussions with the Indian government and noted interest from France to support the 1,544-kilometer railway network.
MinDA Chairperson Leo Tereso A. Magno has also met with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to explore private-sector investment through public-private partnerships. While the Philippines previously withdrew a request for Chinese official development assistance in 2023, MinDA is encouraging CCECC to submit unsolicited proposals for specific segments of the project.
The first phase of the railway aims to connect Tagum, Davao, and Digos cities, potentially reducing travel time between Tagum and Digos from over three hours to one hour. The DOTr expects to complete the bidding process by 2027 and is currently prioritizing right-of-way acquisition.
