Mindfulness and meditation can reduce stress in five minutes daily

Experts suggest that short, daily mindfulness and meditation practices can significantly impact mental and physiological health. Neuroscientist Richard Davidson, director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, notes that just five minutes of daily meditation can reduce interleukin 6 (IL-6), a physiological marker associated with sustained stress.

Davidson also highlights that consistent short sessions can activate butyrate production in the gut microbiota. Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid that serves as fuel for intestinal cells and facilitates communication between the gut and the brain. He emphasizes that neuroplasticity is neutral; therefore, meditation should be used to direct mental focus rather than allowing the brain to be filled with repetitive noise or digital distractions.

Ronald Siegel, a professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School, explains that mindfulness involves paying attention to internal and external experiences with an attitude of acceptance. While often confused with meditation, Siegel clarifies that meditation is a broader form of mental training used to cultivate specific attitudes, such as compassion or concentration, through mindfulness practices.
