Çayırhan mine collapse in Ankara kills one worker and injures 19

A fatal mine collapse occurred at the Çayırhan Enerji İşletmesi in the Beypazarı district of Ankara. The accident, which took place around 18:00, was caused by a ceiling collapse that created a sudden air pressure wave, throwing workers across the site. One miner, Erdi Kahveci, lost his life, while 19 other workers were injured. Of the injured, four are reported to be in serious condition.

Ankara Governor Yakup Canbolat confirmed that 20 people in total were affected by the incident, including those impacted by smoke, gas, and pressure. An administrative and judicial investigation has been launched to determine if negligence or technical failures occurred. So far, nine suspects have been detained as part of the investigation.

The incident has drawn political criticism, with the CHP calling for an inquiry into whether privatization and profit-driven pressures compromised safety standards. The Çayırhan mine site was privatized in 2025 and transferred to Akçadağ İnşaat Enerji ve Madencilik AŞ.
