Mine collapse in Manica province kills six people

At least six people died following a mine collapse in the Vandúzi district of Manica province during the early hours of Thursday. The incident occurred at the Seis Carros mine, an area used for illegal artisanal mining.

Survivors reported that a large fissure appeared in the mine's structure around midnight, followed by a sudden collapse while miners were extracting sand. The lack of visibility during the night prevented any preventive action.

The Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) confirmed the recovery of at least six bodies. Police spokesperson Mouzinho Manasse stated that while the area is subject to patrols intended to stop illegal activities, miners often enter the sites between midnight and 3:00 AM to evade detection due to low visibility and dense vegetation. The Seis Carros site has reportedly seen more than 60 deaths from similar incidents over recent years.
