Minecraft announces Ice Caves update for Winter 2026

Mojang Studios has announced the upcoming Ice Caves update for Minecraft, scheduled as the final game drop of 2026 around November or December. This new underground biome will generate rarely beneath existing cold biomes, introducing increased environmental variety and new challenges for players.

Key features include Ice Crystals, which can be placed vertically or horizontally for decoration and serve as a primary light source within the caves. The update also introduces the Frozen Zombie, a hostile mob that can apply a stacking freezing effect through melee attacks. These zombies can also throw ice balls that deal damage and apply knockback.

Players can utilize ice balls as weapons or use them to craft new potions. Additionally, the update introduces new mob mechanics where regular zombies can be converted into Frozen Zombies when exposed to powder snow, potentially allowing for advanced mob farming.
