Minecraft creator Markus Persson shifts stance to embrace AI coding

Markus “Notch” Persson, the billionaire creator of Minecraft, has reversed his long-standing opposition to artificial intelligence in software development. Previously, Persson was a vocal critic of AI coding, labeling it an “incredibly bad idea” in January and suggesting that those advocating for it were “either incompetent or evil.” He argued that programming should be rooted in logic rather than mere typing.

His stance shifted following difficulties in hiring talented programmers. In late July, Persson expressed interest in attempting “vibe coding” and began exploring use cases for the AI model Claude. He acknowledged the change in position on August 10, stating, “Maybe it’s time to eat some crow.”

Persson’s earlier skepticism was reinforced in April following a security breach of Mojang Studios co-founder Jakob Porsér’s X account, which had been used to defend AI-driven programming. Persson at the time dismissed the trend as artificial hype intended to change the industry narrative.
