Mineola man charged with arson after apartment fire reveals chemical lab

Nolan Gaugler, 34, has been charged with arson and reckless endangerment following a fire in his Mineola apartment that revealed an illegal chemical laboratory.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, the incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. on a Sunday when Gaugler was conducting a chemistry experiment. The mixture reportedly “reacted violently,” prompting Gaugler to throw the substance into a third-floor hallway, where it ignited. The fire caused damage to the hallway and flooring, leading to the temporary evacuation of the Lincoln Avenue apartment building.

Investigators discovered a substantial quantity of laboratory equipment and chemicals inside the unit, some of which were determined to be unstable and explosive. While the specific hazardous materials were not identified, authorities stated they were safely discarded. No injuries were reported. Gaugler has pleaded not guilty and was released with an ankle monitor.
