Mineral Resources shares fall amid declining lithium prices

Mineral Resources Ltd (ASX: MIN) has experienced a significant decline in its share price, falling approximately 12.6% over the past five sessions and more than 20% over the last month. While the company has not released major announcements to explain the volatility, the downturn coincides with a slump in the lithium market.

Lithium carbonate prices have dropped more than 12% over the past month. This trend is affecting several Australian mining stocks, including PLS Group Ltd, which fell 17.58% in a month, and Liontown Resources Ltd, which declined 21.35%. Factors contributing to the lithium price decline include changes in how Shanghai Metals Market measures lithium carbonate inventories and reports of China temporarily pausing approvals for new battery energy storage manufacturing projects.

In contrast to the lithium sector, iron ore prices have remained relatively stable, trading at approximately US$97.42 per tonne, an increase of about 2.3%.
