Mineral vs. chemical sunscreen: Key differences and benefits

Consumers face a choice between mineral and chemical sunscreens, each offering different mechanisms for UV protection. Mineral sunscreens utilize zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to physically reflect and scatter UV radiation from the skin's surface. These formulas are generally recommended for sensitive or reactive skin as they are less likely to cause irritation and begin working immediately upon application.

Chemical sunscreens use organic compounds to absorb UV energy and convert it into heat. While they often spread more easily and integrate better under makeup, certain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate have been detected in human blood and urine. While the FDA has noted these compounds can be absorbed, it has stated more data is required to reach definitive safety conclusions regarding health outcomes.

Environmental concerns also play a role in the selection process. Certain chemical ingredients are linked to coral reef damage and are banned in jurisdictions like Hawaii. Ultimately, dermatological organizations emphasize that the documented risk of skin cancer from sun exposure outweighs the unproven risks associated with sunscreen absorption.
