Mineros de Zacatecas lead Liga Expansión MX clubs in silent protest over suspended promotion

Several Liga Expansión MX clubs, led by Mineros de Zacatecas, staged silent protests by covering their mouths at the start of matches to demand the reinstatement of promotion and relegation. The protests began after the Federación Mexicana de Futbol (FMF) confirmed that the suspension of the ascenso‑descenso system, originally decided by Liga MX owners in 2020, will remain in place.

The FMF disciplinary commission warned the clubs that further sanctions, including fines, could be imposed. Despite the threat, Mineros de Zacatecas repeated the protest before their July 31 match against Coyotes de Tlaxcala, with players and supporters forming the word “ascenso” on the field. The game proceeded, and Mineros won 3‑1, while the league’s decision continues to draw criticism from clubs and fans who argue it undermines competitive integrity.
