Mini Cooper to adopt rear-wheel drive on new BMW platform

Development has begun on the next generation of the Mini Cooper, which is expected to undergo a significant technical shift by adopting rear-wheel drive. This move would mark the first time in 30 years that the model moves away from a front-wheel-drive configuration.

Engineers indicate the new model will likely utilize BMW Group’s new Gen6 platform, which is designed primarily for electric vehicles with rear-wheel drive. While the transition to the Gen6 platform is expected for electric models, internal combustion versions may continue to use different technical bases, potentially retaining front-wheel drive or incorporating hybrid technology.

Design chief Holger Hampf stated that the new generation will aim to reconnect with the brand’s heritage while maintaining a modern interpretation. The design philosophy intends to preserve the classic Mini proportions, such as a short length and wheels positioned close to the corners of the chassis, potentially drawing inspiration from the R50 model introduced in 2001.
