Mini unveils rugged Countryman off‑road prototype

Mini is testing a camouflaged, rugged prototype of its Countryman SUV in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. The vehicle, described as a special “Rugged” or “Off‑road” edition, features higher ground clearance, General Grabber AT3 all‑terrain tyres, a roof‑mounted pop‑up tent and all‑wheel drive. The development programme includes validation runs on gravel tracks, rocky slopes and remote mountain roads in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.

Mini says the prototype will be presented to the world in October 2026 and will make its competitive debut in the all‑women Rebelle Rally later that year. Mini director Jean‑Philippe Parain said the project reflects the brand’s long‑standing adventure ethos, while design chief Holger Hampf linked the edition to growing consumer demand for outdoor‑oriented vehicles.
