Minimum wage increases announced for Kagawa and Akita prefectures

Minimum wage rates are being revised in several Japanese prefectures. In Kagawa, the regional minimum wage will be set at 1,092 yen per hour effective October 1, 2026. Specific industry minimums have also been updated, including 1,159 yen for ship manufacturing and repair, and 1,158 yen for various machinery manufacturing, with different effective dates ranging from late 2025 to late 2026.

In Akita Prefecture, the new minimum wage has been set at 1,090 yen per hour, representing a 59 yen increase. This new rate is scheduled to take effect on October 14, 2026. Local businesses in Akita have expressed concerns regarding the ability to secure funds for these raises, noting the challenges of managing increased labor costs through price adjustments or cost-cutting measures.
