Mining Accidents Kill Miners in Bolivia and Colombia

Four miners died in separate incidents in the Potosí mining region of Bolivia. A 32‑year‑old worker was killed by a dynamite blast on 28 July, a 21‑year‑old died instantly when a rock slab fell, a 16‑year‑old succumbed to injuries after another rock fall, and a 19‑year‑old fell about 90 metres while handling mineral loads. The deaths highlight the hazards of explosions, rock‑fall and deep‑shaft work in Bolivian mines.

In Colombia, two miners were killed on 23 July when a tunnel collapsed at the El Gran Porvenir mine in the rural municipality of Líbano, Tolima. Victims Sergio Villamil Ríos and Eliécer Bermúdez Rivera were trapped in the underground shaft and could not be rescued despite emergency response efforts. The incident has renewed calls for stricter safety oversight of underground mining operations in the region.
