Arcata mining activity linked to severe water contamination in Peru
Residents and the Vigilance Committee of Arcata, Arequipa, have denounced severe water contamination resulting from over 70 years of mining activity. Environmental monitoring at the Sierra Minera Caraz unit revealed sulfate concentrations of 4716 mg/L, far exceeding the 500 mg/L environmental standard. Additionally, arsenic levels in the Huisca Huisca lagoon were recorded at 0.35 mg/L, significantly above the 0.01 mg/L limit.
According to Arcata Mayor Martín Huamani Quispe, the crisis directly impacts the water consumption of more than 300 families. Community legal advisor Demetrio Rojas reported that residents in Arcata and Alacate are suffering from gastrointestinal, skin, and ocular ailments, as well as cancer cases, though medical confirmation of the link to mining effluents is pending.
While the Regional Government of Arequipa proposed a treatment plant to mitigate the issue, locals claim no progress has been made to ensure a safe water supply. Separately, the Environmental Evaluation and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) has previously sanctioned Compañía Minera Ares for operating drilling and sounding platforms without the necessary environmental certifications.
