Mining concerns rise near Ausangate in Cusco, Peru
Local communities in Cusco, Peru, are expressing significant concern regarding potential mining activities near the Ausangate mountain. The Ausangate Regional Conservation Area (ACR), established in 2019, covers over 66,000 hectares across the Quispicanchi and Canchis provinces to protect high Andean ecosystems, glaciers, and vital water regulation systems.
The Centrales de Rondas Campesinas de Ocongate issued a statement on October 1, 2026, rejecting mining activities near Ausangate. They specifically highlighted risks posed by mining rights attributed to Qori Orcco II near the Qolque Cruz and Viscachani sectors. Community organizations warn that such activities could threaten water sources, springs, wetlands, the Sigrina Qocha lagoon, and the Qolque Cruz river.
