Mining drilling in Ordu sparks environmental and livestock concerns

Controversy is mounting over mining drilling operations conducted by Taşzemin, a subsidiary of the Taşyapı Group, near the Perşembe Plateau in the Aybastı and Korgan districts of Ordu, Turkey. Local environmental organizations and residents have raised serious concerns regarding the impact of these activities on the local ecosystem and livestock.

Ertuğrul Gazi Gönül, President of the Ordu Environmental Association (ORÇEV), reported that several head of cattle have died or suffered miscarriages in the Turnalık Obası area. Gönül alleged that drilling fluids are being discharged into pastures, leading to claims that animals are being poisoned after drinking the water. Additionally, residents have complained about noise pollution from drilling that continues through the night.

Bedir Silme, Deputy President of the Kabataş Environmental Association (KAKÇEV), stated that companies are failing to follow required environmental standards, such as sealing drilling sites with clay to protect watercourses, instead opting to cover them with simple soil. The project is described as one of the largest mining operations in the Black Sea region, with plans for approximately 150 drilling sites. Local advocates emphasize that the area is vital for tourism, livestock, and cultural heritage.
