Mining impacts spark protests in Catamarca, Argentina

Residents and territorial assemblies in Catamarca, Argentina, are raising alarms regarding the environmental impact of mining operations in the Sierra de Ancasti, El Alto, and western valleys. Local communities report that extractive projects are deteriorating traditional habitats through the dispersion of mineral dust, soil alterations, and threats to water sources used for human consumption and livestock.

Citizen mobilization has intensified against the El Alto lithium project, promoted by Litios del Norte S. A. and the Ministry of Mining. Assemblies in Ancasti and Frías have demanded the annulment of public consultations, citing a lack of mass dissemination and restricted access to environmental impact studies. They argue that exploration drilling and high water usage directly threaten local forests and natural springs.

In addition to water disputes, residents report air and soil degradation caused by mechanical blasting and heavy truck traffic, which creates dense clouds of particulate matter. This sediment covers gardens and native pastures, impacting local microfauna and subsistence farming. Furthermore, locals have criticized the lack of independent monitoring stations, noting that official controls rely heavily on reports provided by the multinational companies themselves.
