Mining industry expansion in Salta drives demand for local suppliers and specialized energy

The mining sector in Salta, Argentina, is undergoing significant expansion, with seven mines currently in operation, one under construction, and over 30 in the exploration phase. Local industry leaders are focusing on ensuring that this growth benefits the province through sustained employment and local contracting.

Juan Martín Gilly, president of the Salta Mining Chamber, emphasized the need for administrative efficiency to keep pace with global competition. Meanwhile, Federico Russo of the Chamber of Mining Company Suppliers (Capemisa) noted that while local firms have invested in equipment and training, they may need to form partnerships with national or international companies to handle large-scale contracts. Russo stated that local suppliers aim to compete based on meeting world-class standards rather than seeking preferential treatment.

In response to the technical demands of high-altitude mining, YPF has introduced ‘Diesel 10 Minero’, a specialized fuel designed for extreme temperatures and low-sulfur requirements. To support these operations, YPF has established a new integrated logistics base in San Antonio de los Cobres, located at 4,000 meters above sea level, to ensure operational continuity in the northern region.
