Mining industry leaders discuss technological transformation and automation
Industry leaders recently convened for the “Mining 4.0: The Future is Already in Operation” summit to discuss the technological transformation of the mining sector. Organized by the Club de Minería y Negocios Alumni UAI in collaboration with Entel Digital and Marsh, the event focused on automation, data usage, and the challenges of integrating new technologies into large-scale operations.
A key case study presented by VOGT highlighted how Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and analytics can improve the efficiency of fluid pumping systems. The discussion included representatives from major companies such as BHP, Anglo American, and Los Pelambres, emphasizing the shift toward more intelligent, data-driven operations.
Experts noted that technology implementation must be strategic rather than merely additive. For tools like Artificial Intelligence and IoT to be effective, companies must address data fragmentation, ensure robust connectivity, and establish strong data governance. Furthermore, as information technology and operational technology integrate, cybersecurity becomes a critical priority. Ultimately, technology is viewed as a tool to enhance human decision-making rather than a replacement for business expertise.
