Mining protests and controversies emerge in Romania

In Vulcan, miners have initiated protests following salary discrepancies. Night shift workers remained underground after their scheduled shift ended on Tuesday morning, while some day shift workers failed to report to their posts. The unrest stems from approximately 50 employees transferred from the Lupeni mine to Vulcan to complete their contribution periods for retirement. Upon receiving their first pay stubs, these workers discovered that the salary scale at Vulcan resulted in differences of several dozen lei compared to their previous roles at Lupeni.

Separately, in the Rășinari commune, tensions are rising over a proposed magnesium mining project in Valea Dobra. Local residents held a protest in Sibiu demanding the project be halted, citing concerns over health, the economy, and biodiversity. While the company, Mineral Proiect Invest, maintains it is following legal procedures, local officials and senators have addressed the community's right to decide via an upcoming referendum scheduled for November 8.
