Mining sector initiatives in Ghana focus on sustainability and safety

Gold Fields Ghana is hosting a two-day suppliers conference titled “Partnership for Enduring Value: Building Resilient Supply Chain Values Beyond Mining.” The event aims to discuss how mining partnerships can create resilient supply chains and sustain economic value after mining operations conclude. The company reported approximately $4.26 billion in domestic spending, with $2.59 billion directed toward host communities, representing about 61% of its total in-country expenditure.

In a separate development, the Golden Star Wassa Mine team won the practical finals of the National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition. Organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines in partnership with the St. John’s Ambulance Service and the Minerals Commission, the event featured both specialized mine teams and community safety teams. Golden Star Wassa secured first place in both the mine team and community categories, emphasizing the importance of industrial health, safety, and emergency response training for both employees and local residents.
