Mining sector sees major activity in Mozambique and South Africa
Kenmare Resources, the operator of the Moma heavy sands mine in Mozambique, has received a non-binding proposal from Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding (IRH) to acquire all of its shares. This interest comes amid ongoing fiscal disputes between Kenmare and the Mozambican government regarding the renewal of its Implementation Agreement and the potential removal of tax and customs benefits.
In South Africa, Anglo American has announced a $676 million investment in an iron ore processing project at the Sishen mine. The project, managed by Kumba Iron Ore, will utilize ultra-high-density ore separation technology. While the investment signals confidence in South Africa's mineral resources, executives noted that infrastructure limitations and administrative delays remain significant operational challenges for the sector.
