Mining specialists propose integrating historical memory and indigenous rights into social management

During the RESMINE 2026 conference, specialists from Women in Mining (WIM) Peru proposed a new approach to social management in the mining sector. The proposal emphasizes incorporating historical memory, cultural heritage, and respect for territorial rights as fundamental pillars for sustainability.

Experts Dixie Arteaga Quiroz and Bettina Reyna Ugarriza argued that mining companies must move beyond simple consultation to understand local dynamics through the unique identity of each territory. This includes recognizing collective memory, co-creating cultural initiatives with local populations, and preserving intangible heritage.

Bettina Reyna noted that 73% of transition mineral projects in the region are located on or near indigenous lands. The presentation highlighted successful Peruvian examples from companies such as Minsur, Lincuna, Hudbay, and Repsol, which have worked to safeguard tangible and intangible cultural expressions, including traditional medicine and local museums.
