Mining stocks gain momentum as precious metal prices hit record highs

Mining stocks are seeing renewed interest as gold, silver, and copper prices reach record highs. This rally is driven by macroeconomic uncertainty, central bank purchases, and structural demand for metals like copper, which is essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

While recent shifts in bond yields and the U.S. dollar have caused some price weakness, underlying fundamentals remain strong for specific companies. Avino Silver & Gold Mines and Discovery Mining have been recognized on the 2026 TSX 30 list for their top three-year, dividend-adjusted returns. Avino, which focuses on silver, gold, and copper, reported a 23% increase in revenue to $26.8 million in its last reported quarter.

In the broader sector, mid-tier gold miners, represented by the GDXJ ETF, are noted for their ability to grow production more efficiently than major miners. Although the sector has faced recent bearish sentiment and price declines, analysts suggest that smaller miners may offer higher potential due to lower market capitalizations and more responsive price action.
