Mining trends in Peru and Mexico highlight infrastructure and production shifts

The mining sectors in Peru and Mexico are facing distinct operational and production shifts. In Peru, the primary challenge for the industry has transitioned from resource availability to the necessity of securing reliable energy and infrastructure. Despite this, Peru's mining exports reached a record US$ 61.8 billion in 2025, driven by copper, gold, zinc, and silver. The sector accounts for approximately 10% of the country's GDP. Experts note that energy security is now a critical factor influencing operational continuity and the ability to expand new projects, particularly in Andean regions where geography complicates grid connectivity.

In Mexico, gold production saw a significant decline of 31.6% in 2025, falling to 2.58 million ounces. The country's output is highly concentrated, with the top ten mining units accounting for 66.7% of total national production. Leading producers include Newmont's Peñasquito mine in Zacatecas and Fresnillo plc's La Herradura in Sonora. While global demand for gold remains driven by jewelry and investment, the Mexican production landscape reflects a period of contraction in extraction volumes.
