Minions & Monsters posts franchise‑low opening as Supergirl suffers 74% second‑weekend drop
The animated prequel Minions & Monsters opened the Fourth of July holiday box office with about $61 million – $64.5 million over five days across 4,243 North American theaters, marking the weakest debut in the seven‑film Despicable Me franchise and falling short of the roughly $80 million expected. The film, produced for $85 million, still finished the frame at No. 1 but the low start raises questions about the reliability of franchise name recognition alone.
At the same time, Warner Bros. and DC Studios' Supergirl saw a dramatic second‑weekend decline of roughly 73%‑76%, dropping from a $37.1 million opening to around $8.6 million–$10 million. This places the film among the steepest falls for recent comic‑book releases, comparable to titles such as Joker: Folie à Deux, The Flash and Morbius, and underscores mounting pressure on DC's superhero slate.
