Turkey addresses financial market volatility and fund investigation

Turkish officials are addressing recent volatility in the capital markets following an investigation into investment funds. Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek emphasized that the government's priority is protecting the real sector's capacity for investment, employment, production, and export. He stated that while legal proceedings against those involved in market-distorting activities are ongoing, no action will be taken against uninvolved individuals or companies. Şimşek also noted that the Ministry of Treasury and Finance is coordinating with the Ministry of Justice to safeguard the rights of fund investors and will provide necessary market liquidity to prevent broader economic impacts.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed that the fund issue was discussed in a Cabinet meeting, asserting that the problem is limited to a small segment of the fund market and does not pose a systemic risk to the Turkish financial system. He vowed to take action against anyone harming citizens through market manipulation or corruption.

In a separate regulatory move, the Central Bank of Turkey (TCMB) is introducing new rules for its foreign currency conversion support program, effective October 1. The new framework removes the previous 'no foreign currency purchase' commitment, replacing it with requirements based on a company's value-added and a limit ensuring liquid foreign currency assets do not exceed 10 percent of total assets or net sales revenue. This change aims to make the support mechanism more inclusive and aligned with actual economic activities.
