Minister Hasipoğlu addresses Filo Jet accident and maritime labor laws

Minister of Labor and Social Security Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has responded to calls for an investigation into the Ministry following the Filo Jet accident. Addressing demands from HÜR-İŞ President Ali Yeltekin, Hasipoğlu argued that the investigation into the accident's causes and the issue of seafarers' work permits are distinct matters, stating that the two are being ‘confused like apples and pears.’

Regarding the legal status of the crew, Hasipoğlu clarified that the current Labor Law does not cover personnel working on vessels engaged in maritime transport. He noted that seafarers operate under different legislation and are issued ‘Seafarer Wallets’ rather than standard work permits from his ministry. He emphasized that the Ministry of Labor does not grant work permits or seal documents for this specific category of workers.

On the technical aspects of the accident, Hasipoğlu stated that the primary focus should remain on navigation safety and the root causes of the incident. He noted police allegations that the captain may have proceeded with the voyage despite knowing the vessel was taking on water, potentially due to previous experiences where similar issues did not prevent arrival. He maintained that the courts must ultimately determine if there was negligence or intent.
