Minister Huur calls for legal protection of FPIC principle

Suriname's Minister of Regional Development, Miquella Huur, has called for the legal codification of the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) principle. Speaking in Marshallkreek, Brokopondo, during the 264th anniversary of the peace agreement between the Saramaccaners and the former colonial administration, Huur emphasized that FPIC is essential for protecting the rights and interests of indigenous and tribal peoples.

Minister Huur noted that ensuring FPIC allows communities to be involved in decisions affecting their territories and lifestyles without coercion. She highlighted that securing these rights is vital for preserving the cultural identity, traditions, and language of the Saamaka community, which serves as a foundation for future generations.

The Saamaka Daka commemoration, held annually on September 19, honored the courage of ancestors who secured peace and freedom in 1762. Local leader Captain Ronny Asabina also urged the community to continue passing down their intangible cultural heritage. The event included traditional ceremonies such as the playing of the Apinti drum and the Towe Wata.
