Peru's Minister of Labor and Employment Promotion, Juan Sheput, visited Arequipa to address regional employment growth and labor formalization. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), employment in Arequipa grew by 8.9% during the second quarter of 2026, the highest increase among 28 evaluated cities.
Sheput’s agenda includes coordinating with the Regional Government and signing an agreement between the National Superintendency of Labor Inspection (Sunafil) and the Arequipa Regional Government to strengthen labor compliance. He also participated in the Regional Forum for Social Dialogue, SMEs, and Formal Employment.
During his visit, Sheput criticized political opposition figures, specifically targeting Roberto Sánchez and the Juntos por el Perú party regarding their stance on a legislative proposal to delegate powers to the Executive for citizen security and El Niño prevention. Additionally, the Minister addressed the vacancy of the EsSalud Arequipa assistance network manager following the resignation of Pedro Torres Eguiluz, stating a replacement would be appointed soon.
