Minister Miquella Huur launches Maroon Legacy Month

Minister Miquella Huur of Regional Development has officially launched Maroon Legacy Month, a series of activities celebrating Maroon culture and addressing the development of the interior. The launch serves as a precursor to Saamaka Daka on September 19 and the Day of the Maroons on October 10.

During the opening event, which featured a lecture and panel discussion, Minister Huur emphasized that the development of the interior cannot be the sole responsibility of the government. She called for self-reflection and proactive involvement from the communities themselves, stressing that structural dialogue between the state and local populations is essential for effective progress.

Key focus areas include providing better perspectives and opportunities for youth in the interior. Additionally, documentary filmmaker Thanya Fonkel presented on the intersection of cultural identity and regional development, noting that progress must occur alongside the preservation of traditions.
