Minister Patrick O'Donovan in intensive care after seizure

Patrick O'Donovan, the Irish Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, remains in intensive care at University Hospital Limerick after falling ill during an EU Presidency meeting.

Mr. O'Donovan was hosting an informal meeting of EU telecommunications ministers at the University of Limerick on Tuesday when he reportedly suffered a seizure. He was subsequently transported to the hospital by ambulance. This follows a previous hospitalization over the summer during an official trip to Brussels.

The Minister, a Fine Gael TD, has previously disclosed a diagnosis of epilepsy and has spoken about struggles with photosensitivity. Prior to his hospitalization, Mr. O'Donovan had publicly criticized anonymous comments regarding his health and competence, describing such discourse as a ‘slap in the face’. Reports indicate that discussions within his party regarding his ability to remain in his ministerial role may follow his recovery.
