Kyriakos Pierrakakis Sunlight Group SEKE tobacco taxation ecclesiastical relics

Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, conducted a series of visits to the regions of Xanthi and Drama, focusing on industrial investments, taxation, and cultural heritage.

In Xanthi, Pierrakakis visited the Sunlight Group's 9 GWh manufacturing facilities to discuss R&D investments and lithium-ion battery innovation. He also met with the Cooperative Association of Greek Tobacco Producers (SEKE). Regarding tobacco taxation, the Minister announced that following negotiations with the European Commission, tax increases will be implemented more gradually, starting in 2036 rather than 2028, to balance public health goals with economic stability.

In Drama, Pierrakakis addressed the return of 48 ecclesiastical relics from Bulgaria to Greece via a bilateral agreement, a move welcomed by the Holy Synod. He also discussed regional infrastructure, noting that while some road projects between Drama, Kavala, and Anthoupoli have contractors, certain financial delays persist due to the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
