Minister Pokharel leaves Madhesh event amid public protests
Public discontent is mounting against the government led by Prime Minister Balen Shah and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The tension was highlighted in Madhesh, where Minister for Education and Sports and government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel was forced to leave a public event due to protests.
The RSP secured a significant mandate in the March 2026 House of Representatives election, winning 182 seats—just two short of a two-thirds majority. This victory was driven by widespread dissatisfaction with traditional political parties and the partnership between Rabi Lamichhane and Balen Shah. However, growing complaints suggest a disconnect between the government’s promises of good governance and the daily experiences of citizens.
